How It Works...

✅Each lesson:

✔️Is 1 hour (60 min) long in total

✔️Consists of a 15 min teaching video broken into 2 - 3 min videos followed by 45 minutes worth of activities

✔️Occurs online with printable guided notes to improve your teen's retention and increase accountability

✅The activities:

✔️Match each of the three learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile) so your teen can experience the differences and easily identify which is the right fit

✔️Are completed off screen by your teen for the best understanding and retention

✔️Are explained in detail to ensure your teen understands the directions before starting and the answers are thorougly explained to check for understanding

✅One study skill (lesson) per week is recommended to allow ample time for practice and real world application

"I (told my daughter), 'I'm gonna get this (Love to Learn) for you because you're so stressed out,

and I'm stressed out trying to figure out how to help you."

Laura

Formerly Stressed Mama of a College Student

"Jessyka has been the absolute best investment in my daughter… hands down! ... Jessyka instill(ed) a joy for learning in my very strong-willed child... how to organize her academic world, how to take tests and persevere, and how to take notes that work and prepare her for more academic rigor. My daughter ended up with all As and Bs."

Aisha, Relieved Mama of an 8th Grader

“... for the first time since 9th grade, Lucas has all A’s! Even in his dual credit college course! Thank you for being a positive influence in his life and for making a difference! He is much more self-disciplined this year! He is also more self-motivated than ever before and making decisions on his own to stay on task and be organized. I really feel like this program was a great choice for my son! I have regained some of my sanity and that is a +++!!!”

Jennifer, Sane Mama of a 12th Grader

"I feel like before (Love to Learn) I was like 'I'm so screwed for college ... I don't know what I'm doing.' So I feel like (Love to Learn) definitely helped a lot."

Taylor, Prepared Student, About to be College Freshman

"The (Love to Learn) program has definitely helped. It's got my grades up quite a little bit. Time management was the most helpful (skill) definitely just because that's the issue that I feel like me and a lot, most other kids, struggle with."

Charles, Successful Student, High School Sophomore

I use my proprietary N.E.R.D.Y. Method — a proven framework that organizes study skills into five key areas: notate, energy, retain, define, and yay! Each study skill builds on the last, creating a comprehensive toolkit for academic success in and out of the classroom.

The study skills toolkit is available through Thinkific. After your purchase, you will receive a unique Thinkific login. Your teen will have access to all 12 video lessons and activities for one year (12 months), with the clocking starting the first time he or she logs in. The guided notes and activity packets will be available for download through Thinkific for that year only. Time will automatically begin 6 months from the purchase date if your child hasn't logged in, yet. Extensions will be available for purchase.

Please see the Scope and Sequence for complete details as well as the bottom of the page for the differences between the Complete Study Skills Toolkit and the individual Study Skill Sets. In short, the study skills are taught using The N.E.R.D.Y. Method which consists of the following study skills in this order (from start to finish): note taking, annotating, creating the perfect study session, retaining information, organization, time management, goal setting, motivation, soft skills, confidence, self-advocacy, and grit and resilience. Following the 12 essential study skills, teens are taught test taking strategies and how to overcome test anxiety.

If you're a homeschooling family, purchase the Complete Study Skills Toolkit for a half-credit elective credit. A certificate of completion will be provided for transcript purposes once your teen watches all 12 study skills lessons and completes all 36 activities (3 activities per study skill).

The videos are short, and the activities are relevant. If your teen loves cats or listens to Taylor Swift music, there's an activity involving those things :) Each tween, teen, and young adult (even every adult) has a preferred way of learning - one way feels easier and more natural compared to the other two. Your teen will learn the study skills AND how to personalize each study skill based on how or she prefers to learn without being told there's only one way to learn and use that study skill.

Yes and no. There are many study skills I teach in the study skills toolkit that EF (executive functioning) coaches don't teach such as note taking and annotating. And yet, study skills like organization and time management are also executive functioning skills. Lastly, executive functioning skills like task initiation and impulse control aren't study skills I directly teach, and yet they are part of the lessons for study skills like motivation, soft skills, and self-advocacy.

Lessons are 60 min (1 hour) a week. Your teen can choose to complete the lesson and activities back-to-back or split them up. Because the study skills toolkit is self-paced, your teen has control of the pacing. And, once your student learns the study skills and executive functioning skills, other homework, assignments, and projects will take less time because your teen will be a more efficient learner.

Middle school is the PERFECT time for your teen to learn study skills. As soon as your child reaches 6th or 7th grade (whatever middle school means for him/her), the study skills taught in the study skills toolkit are needed. But, it's never too late to learn how to learn using The N.E.R.D.Y. Method. I have taught study skills to high schoolers, college students, and even adults going back to school for everything from GEDs to Graduate Degrees.

Content / academic / subject-specific tutors are amazing people. I know your child may sometimes need help getting caught up and actually learning the material in a certain class before study skills have the desired results. That's why I also offer content tutoring in addition to study skills tutoring. BUT, academic / class-specific tutoring is a very short-term solution. It's like a BandAid whereas using The N.E.R.D.Y. Method to teach your teen HOW to learn builds the life-long foundation content tutoring can't.

Executive Functioning Coaches teach EF Skills (executive functioning skills). Many of those skills are included in the toolkit. BUT, study skills like note taking and annotating aren't taught by EF coaches.

As to therapists and counselors, therapy is VERY different from tutoring. Many families with teens who have ADHD, are strong-willed, or have behavior problems have noted bigger, better improvements as a result of the study skills toolkit vs therapy.

I totally get it! If I'm honest, the first lesson can be a little rough. Yet, once your teen experiences how much easier learning and schooling can be with these new study skills, there will be less and less resistance. Teens regularly go from feeling like they "have to" learn study skills to looking forward to personalizing and simplifying their homework and study time based on their interests and what actually works for them.

Your son or daughter is welcome and encouraged to submit any questions or confusions on Thinkific or via email. I'm happy to respond within 48 hours!

I also offer 30 min 1:1 lessons to families who submit a testimonial as a thank you and to answer any questions / fill in any gaps. Plus, you can purchase 60 min 1:1 lessons a la carte to provide your student with additional support.

The simple answer is NO! Choose to be proactive vs reactive. EVERY teen hits his or her wall at some point. I always say teens are like ticking time bombs. Maybe it's 6th grade or calculus 3 in college. But at some point, your child's natural abilities will run out or plateau without study skills.

Yet, if your student learns HOW to learn and knows The N.E.R.D.Y. Method, those rough spots are nothing more than speed bumps, not mountains.

Yes. Many of the teens I tutor are neurodiverse. I've taught study skills to tweens, teens, and young adults who have everything from ADHD, ADD, AuDHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. I have also tutored students with physical limitations such as deafness and blindness as well as teens with OT concerns.

No. The study skills toolkit will help your teen no matter where in the world you live. I've had the privilege to work with many international families. Teens have lived in several different countries such as: Australia, the United Kingdom, Brazil, China, Nepal, South America, Canada, and more. Learning is learning, no matter where in the world you live. Yes, school systems may look different or school years start and end at different times, but teens benefit from The N.E.R.D.Y. Method no matter where or how they go to school.
